Juniper MX10004, MX10008 & MX10016
High-Capacity MX10000 Series Modular Routers
The Juniper MX10004, MX10008, and MX10016 are high-end, modular routing platforms designed for
service providers, cloud operators, and large enterprises that require massive scale, carrier-grade reliability,
and flexible 100G/400G interface options. Together, these systems make up the MX10000 Series Universal Routing Platform,
offering exceptional throughput, scalability, and forwarding performance for today’s IP core and edge networks.

BrightStar Systems provides fully tested, used and refurbished MX10004, MX10008, and MX10016 routers
to help you expand or refresh your core and aggregation infrastructure at a fraction of OEM cost.
Each chassis and line card is rigorously tested and backed by our in-house warranty for dependable deployment
in production networks.
MX10000 Series at a Glance
The MX10000 family delivers massive switching and routing capacity with modular growth options, supporting
high-density 100G and 400G services. These platforms are ideal for environments where uptime, scale, and
flexible interface options are critical.

Platform-Specific MX10000 Line Cards
Unlike earlier MX platforms that use MPC line cards, the MX10004, MX10008, and MX10016
use dedicated, platform-specific line cards engineered for very high 100G/400G density. Common examples include:

MX10K-LC2101 – High-performance line card designed for dense 100G deployments.
MX10K-LC480 – Line card optimized for 100G and 400G services in edge and aggregation roles.
MX10K-LC9600 – Very high-capacity line card intended for core and large peering applications.

These MX10K line cards provide the forwarding capacity and port density required for modern IP core,
metro, and DCI networks. When combined with the MX10004, MX10008, or MX10016 chassis, they deliver
a scalable, future-ready routing platform.
Note: Always verify exact line-card support, chassis revision, and Junos version for a specific MX10K-LC part
number prior to deployment.

Common MX10000 Deployment Scenarios

Service Provider Core: High-capacity routing between major POPs and backbone sites.
Metro & Aggregation Backbone: High-density 100G/400G aggregation across metro rings.
Internet Exchange & Peering: Large BGP tables, multiple peers, and high-bandwidth interconnects.
Data Center Interconnect (DCI): EVPN-VXLAN and high-speed transport between regional data centers.
Cloud Edge / 5G Transport: Segment Routing and MPLS for mobile and cloud subscriber traffic.

Optimized for EVPN, MPLS & Segment Routing
The MX10004, MX10008, and MX10016 are powered by Juniper’s advanced Trio silicon and support a full
suite of carrier and data-center features, including:

EVPN-VXLAN for modern data center and multi-site fabric connectivity.
MPLS and L3VPN for traffic engineering and multi-tenant services.
Segment Routing (SR-MPLS and SRv6) for simplified traffic steering.
BGP, IS-IS, OSPF at large scale with rich policy options.
High-availability features such as ISSU and extensive redundancy options.

MX10004 vs MX10008 vs MX10016
All three MX10000 chassis share the same design philosophy, but they scale differently in slot count
and overall throughput:

Model
Best For
Advantages
When to Choose

MX10004
High-capacity edge, metro aggregation
Smaller footprint, fewer slots, easier to deploy in space-constrained POPs
When you need multi-Tbps routing without a large chassis

MX10008
Regional core, large POPs
More slots and growth headroom than MX10004
When you expect rapid scale in the next 3–5 years

MX10016
Large-scale IP core & peering
Maximum slot count and highest capacity in the MX10000 family
When building long-term, large-capacity core infrastructure

Why Buy Refurbished MX10000 Series Routers?

Significant cost savings vs new hardware, especially with fully populated line-card configurations.
Thoroughly tested chassis, line cards, and power components by BrightStar Systems.
1-Year in-house warranty coverage on most platforms.
Bulk purchasing options and trade-in programs for large network refreshes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do MX10004, MX10008, and MX10016 use MPC line cards?
No. The MX10000 Series uses platform-specific MX10K line cards such as MX10K-LC2101, MX10K-LC480,
and MX10K-LC9600. These are engineered specifically for the MX10000 chassis and are not the same as MPC cards
used in earlier MX platforms.
Can I reuse line cards from MX480 or MX960 in an MX10008 or MX10016?
In general, MPC line cards from MX240 / MX480 / MX960 are not supported in MX10000 chassis.
You should plan to use MX10K-series line cards with MX10004, MX10008, and MX10016.
Contact us if you’d like help evaluating your current hardware for compatibility.
Are these platforms a good fit for smaller enterprises?
Most smaller enterprises do not require the scale of MX10004, MX10008, or MX10016. For more compact edge or
aggregation roles, consider platforms like the
MX204 or
MX304.
Can BrightStar Systems help design an MX10000-based network?
Yes. Our team can help you select the appropriate chassis, MX10K line cards, optics, and supporting MX platforms
to meet your core, aggregation, or peering requirements.
