SRX5000 Gateways Are the Most Advanced SRX Series Devices

The SRX5000 line of gateways is comprised of three high-end security devices: the SRX5400, the SRX5600 and the SRX5800. These gateways represent the higher-performing end of the SRX Series; they’re designed for intensive data center and service provider applications.

All three devices are designed as modular chassis and can be customized using different types of line cards, including I/O cards (IOCs), Flex IOCs, Modular Port Concentrators (MPCs), Services Processing Cards (SPCs) and Switch Control Boards (SCBs).

These cards offer flexibility by allowing you to customize your device to best fit your needs. They also make it easy to scale your physical network connections as you grow; you can replace cards with limited port densities with higher density cards without replacing the entire chassis.

The number of line card slots is the primary difference between the three devices. The number of slots is ultimately determined by the size of the device. The bigger the device, the more slots.

Not every device supports every type of card, however. In addition, not all cards are compatible with each other; each one has it’s own interoperability standards that you’ll need to consider.

Juniper SRX5400 Gateway Specifications

The Juniper SRX5400 is the smallest of the three models at 5 rack units (RUs) in size. You can fit eight SRX5400 gateways in a single hardware rack.

In terms of security, the firewall performance on the SRX5400 is 65 Gbps and the IPS performance is 22 Gbps. It supports 42 million concurrent sessions and 420,000 new sessions.

It has four line card slots, but one is a dedicated SCB slot. The SCB controls all the essential functions, such as power, clocking and system resets and reboots, inside the gateway. It also interconnects all the IOCs within the chassis and houses the routing engine.

The Juniper SRX5400 supports the SRX5K-SCB, the SRX5K-SCBE and the SRX5K-SCB3 Services Processing Cards and SRX5K-RE-13-20 and SRX5K-RE-1800X4 routing engines.

The other three slots can be used as a combination of SPC and MPC slots, but you must install at least one of each in the chassis. The SRX5400 does not support IOCs or Flex IOCs.

An SPC provides the processing power for all security-related services on the device, including firewall, IPsec and IDP services. All traffic travels through the SPC. The SRX5400 supports the SRX5K-SPC-4-15-320 and the SRX5K-SPC3 Services Processing Cards.

An MPC is similar to a Flex IOC; both provide additional physical interface ports for connecting to the network. The biggest difference is that Flex IOCs use port modules whereas MPCs use Modular Interface Card (MIC) slots. Each MPC has two MIC slots.

However, port modules and MICs are not interoperable; port modules work exclusively with Flex IOCs and MICs work exclusively with MPCs. The Juniper SRX5400 supports the SRX5K-MPC, including the SRX5K-MPC-BB and the SRX5K-MPC-R models, the SRX5K-MPC3-40G10G and the SRX5K-MPC3-100G10G Modular Port Concentrators.

Juniper SRX5600 and SRX5800 Specifications

The SRX5600 measures 8 RU in size, which means you can fit up to five in a floor-to-ceiling rack. It has a total of eight slots, but two are dedicated SCB slots. The six remaining slots can be equipped with any combination of SPCs, MPCs, IOCs and Flex IOCs.

The security specs on the SRX5600 represent a significant step up from the SRX5400. It has a firewall performance of 130 Gbps, an IPS performance of 50 Gbps and a VPN performance of 100 Gbps. It also supports 114 million concurrent sessions and 1 million new sessions.

The Juniper SRX5800 gateway is 16 rack units and contains 14 total line card slots, two of which are for SCBs. The remaining 12 slots support SPCs, MPCs, IOCs and Flex IOCs.

The SRX5800 has the most advanced security specifications of any SRX gateway. Its firewall performance is 320 Gbps, its IPS performance is 100 Gbps and its VPN performance is 200 Gbps. It supports as many as 230 million concurrent sessions and 2 million new sessions.

Both the Juniper SRX5600 and SRX5800 support an additional Services Processing Card, the SRX5K-SPC-2-10-40, as well as the same routing engines and MPCs as the SRX5400.

The SRX5600 and Juniper SRX5800 support several IOCs and Flex IOCs as well, including the following:

• SRX5K-40GE-SFP
• SRX5K-4XGE-XFP
• SRX5K-FPC-IOC
• SRX-IOC-16GE-SFP
• SRX-IOC-16GE-TX
• SRX-IOC-4XGE-XFP

The SRX5600 and SRX5800, as well as the Juniper SRX5400, all support the same MICs for their MPCs. The supported MICs are as follows:

• SRX-MIC-1X100G-CFP
• SRX-MIC-2X40G-QSFP
• SRX-MIC-10XG-SFPP
• SRX-MIC-20GE-SFP

Whether you’re using an SRX5400, an SRX5600 or an SRX5800, you need to make sure all the available line card slots are filled. Otherwise, you’ll need to install a blank panel in order to block the empty slot and allow cool air produced by the fans to circulate properly through the device.

The same goes for any MIC slots in your installed MPCs; if you leave any of the slots unoccupied, you’ll need to install a blank panel in those as well.
