Juniper PTX Series Buying Guide: PTX10001-36MR, PTX10002-36QDD & PTX10003

Published September 2026. Specifications are taken from Juniper’s PTX hardware documentation and lifecycle status from Juniper’s published PTX Series hardware milestones; sources are named in each section.

The Juniper PTX Series is Juniper’s packet transport router line: fixed and modular systems built on Juniper’s own Express silicon for core, peering, and infrastructure-edge roles where the requirement is very high 100G and 400G density with full internet routing scale. BrightStar Systems buys and sells refurbished PTX routers, and the PTX10001-36MR in particular has become one of the most requested Juniper platforms we handle. This guide explains what each current PTX model is, where the family sits in Juniper’s lifecycle, how the PTX10001-36MR compares with the MX304 and the Arista 7280R3 alternatives buyers usually weigh against it, and what to check when buying one refurbished.

The Current Fixed-Configuration PTX Models

Three fixed PTX systems are current as of September 2026. All three are positioned by Juniper for peering, core routing, and infrastructure edge routing in cloud provider, service provider, and content provider networks.

Above these sit the modular PTX10008 and PTX10016 chassis, which take PTX10K line cards. The first-generation PTX10008-BASE and PTX10016-BASE bundles and the LC1101, LC1102, and LC1105 line cards are already end-of-sale (see lifecycle below), while the chassis continue with newer line cards.

PTX10001-36MR in Detail

The PTX10001-36MR is the PTX buyers ask us about most, and for good reason: it packs 9.6 Tbps of Express 4 forwarding into one rack unit. Per Juniper’s PTX10001-36MR hardware guide:

  • Ports: 24 QSFP56-DD ports capable of 400GbE and 12 QSFP28 ports capable of 100GbE, supporting 10, 25, 40, 100, and 400 Gbps operation with breakout, plus an RJ-45 management port, a console/time-of-day port, and a USB port.
  • Encryption: inline MACsec on all 100-Gigabit and 400-Gigabit interfaces.
  • Control plane: a 2.1 GHz 12-core Intel CPU with 64 GB of RAM and dual 200 GB M.2 SSDs, running Junos OS Evolved (not classic Junos OS; this matters for feature parity and automation tooling if you are migrating from MX or PTX1000).
  • Power and cooling: two 3000 W power supplies (AC/HVDC or DC, not mixed) in 1+1 redundancy, and six hot-swappable fan modules with dual counter-rotating fans. Juniper’s power planning figures list 1,538 W typical and 2,112 W maximum for a fully loaded system, so budget rack power accordingly.

PTX Lifecycle Status (September 2026)

From Juniper’s published PTX Series hardware milestones:

  • PTX10001-36MR, PTX10002-36QDD, and PTX10003-80C/160C have no end-of-life announcement as of September 2026.
  • PTX1000 (PTX1K-18Q/36Q/72Q) and PTX10002-60C: end of life announced April 22, 2022; last order October 22, 2022; end of support October 22, 2028.
  • PTX10008-BASE and PTX10016-BASE bundles with the LC1101, LC1102, and LC1105 line cards: end of life announced June 13, 2022; last order April 3, 2023; end of support April 3, 2029.
  • PTX10001-20C and PTX10001-36C (the earlier 100G fixed models): end of support December 31, 2024.
  • PTX3000: end of support March 31, 2027. PTX5000: end of support December 30, 2024.

PTX10001-36MR vs MX304 vs Arista 7280DR3-24

These three are the platforms most often shortlisted together for a compact 400G router, and they solve different problems.

In short: choose the PTX10001-36MR when the job is moving large volumes of 400G traffic with internet-scale routing and MACsec in the smallest footprint; choose the MX304 when you need the MX service feature set or want to grow port by port with line-card MICs; choose the 7280DR3 when the surrounding fabric is Arista and deep buffering matters more than transport features. If the requirement is a fixed 1U router at 1.6 Tbps rather than 9.6 Tbps, with 400GbE, 25/50GbE, and line-rate MACsec, Juniper’s MX301 (Trio 6, Junos OS, positioned as the MX204’s successor) sits below both the PTX10001-36MR and the MX304. Buying a Refurbished PTX10001-36MR

PTX routers hold their value because each one carries real capacity, and the supply of used units is thin compared with switches. A few points specific to buying one used:

  • Confirm the exact SKU. PTX10001-36MR, -36MR-K, and -36MR-LT are ordered as different part numbers. Tell us which one your design or license plan calls for.
  • Power supplies. Units ship with AC/HVDC or DC supplies and the two types cannot be mixed in one chassis. State your facility power when you request a quote.
  • Software. The platform runs Junos OS Evolved. Check that the release train you standardize on supports the features you need; as with all refurbished equipment, software licensing is arranged with the manufacturer.
  • Optics. Budget for 400G optics separately. QSFP56-DD ports accept QSFP28 100G optics as well as 400G, which gives you a migration path if you are not yet fully 400G.
  • Testing and warranty. Every PTX we sell goes through our 9-point inspection and testing process and ships with our 1-year in-house warranty for end users.
